Practical Tips for Customers from Ireland
How do I know the color code of my car/motorcycle?
For all vehicles, including Irish cars, motorcycles, and trucks, the official color code is decisive for the color. The official color code of a car, motorcycle, or truck is usually found in specific locations, depending on the make and model. Here are the most common locations:
Car
- Driver’s side door pillar: The color code is often on a sticker or plate inside the driver’s side door pillar.
- Under the hood: Sometimes the color code is placed on a plate under the hood, usually at the front or on the side.
- Trunk: In some cars, you will find the color code in the trunk, for example under the lining or in the spare wheel compartment.
- Glove compartment: In some cases, the color code is in the glove compartment.
Motorcycle
- Frame: The color code can be on a sticker or plate on the frame of the motorcycle, often near the steering column.
- Side panels: Sometimes the color code is mentioned on the inside of the side panels of the motorcycle.
- Manual: The color code can also be mentioned in the user manual of the motorcycle.
Truck
- Driver’s side door pillar: As with cars, the color code is often on a sticker or plate inside the driver’s side door pillar.
- Cabin: In some trucks, the color code can be found inside the cabin, for example on the dashboard or behind the seats.
- Chassis: In some cases, the color code is attached to a plate fixed to the truck’s chassis.
General
- Manual: Always check the vehicle’s user manual, as it often contains information about where to find the color code.
- Dealer: If you cannot find the color code, you can also contact the brand’s dealer. They can usually help you find the correct color code using the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).
In some cases, the color code can also be mentioned on the vehicle’s official documents. However, this varies by country and document type. Here are some examples of where you can find the color code on official documents:
Registration Documents
- Registration certificate: In some countries, the color code or at least the color of the vehicle is mentioned on the registration certificate (also known as the registration document or vehicle registration certificate).
- Ownership documents: The ownership documents of the vehicle can sometimes contain information about the color code.
Manufacturer Documents
- Certificate of Origin: This document, issued by the manufacturer, may contain information about the original specifications of the vehicle, including the color code.
- User manual: The manual that comes with the vehicle may have a section explaining where to find the color code on the vehicle itself.
Insurance Documents
- Insurance policy: Sometimes the color of the vehicle is mentioned in the insurance policy, although this is often less detailed than a specific color code.
Maintenance and Service Booklets
- Maintenance booklet: Kept by dealers or maintenance companies, these booklets can contain the color code, especially if the paint has been updated or restored during maintenance.
Import Documents (for imported vehicles)
- Customs documents: For imported vehicles, the customs documents may contain details about the vehicle’s specifications, including the color code.
Invoice or Purchase Receipt
- Purchase invoice: The original purchase invoice of the vehicle, provided by the dealer, may contain the color code as part of the vehicle’s specifications.
